a juxtaposition of raw and refined materials creates energy in an eco-friendly garden for all seasons

—project description—

Alongside a historic, unpaved cart path, this unique, custom home provides its clients with an escape from Boston's metropolis. The house was deliberately situated atop the property’s highest point, where it engages distinct, granite outcroppings to take full advantage of expansive ocean views. Design elements in the landscape share the integrative spirit of the architecture where highly refined materials are used as counterpoint to the unspoiled character of the land. The resulting interface between the built and natural landscape is the “theater” for the property’s extensive gardens, which highlight the unique geologic features, showcase interest in all seasons and which blend into the surrounding woodland at the property’s periphery.

The property proudly boasts not a single square foot of turf lawn. The woodland edge habitat is routinely managed and plantings were conceived as colonies using native plant masses of mountain laurel, virginia sweetspire, clethra alnifolia, highbush blueberry, northern baybery, fragrant sumac, sweet gale, ferns, winterberry and witch hazel.
