traditional meets contemporary in this timeless classic
—project description—
This extraordinary seaside residence represents a tight collaboration between client, architect, landscape and interior designers. It was conceived as both a historical restoration and re-invention of a Dutch Colonial (circa 1910). Using a measured blend of traditional and contemporary styles, the resulting transformation is informed by current lifestyle trends, but at the same time achieves a look that is both timeless and classic. Clean, simple lines, traditional materials, a diverse plant palette, and resort-like amenities all combine to achieve a harmony of elements and an array of living spaces conducive to modern living.
The property’s outdoor rooms are an extension of the interior. Decks flow into staggered bluestone walks connecting a salt water pool deck, spa niche, and a grilling and dining terrace. Stone walls and a custom fence embrace the regional vernacular, incorporating Cape Granite ashlar to add architectural weight and a sense of enduring quality. The resulting barrier provides privacy for outdoor entertaining, but without impeding treasured ocean views.
The planting scheme builds on magnificent, existing Saucer Magnolias, mature masses of Winterberry, Highbush Blueberry and Downy Shadblow. Masses of juniper, inkberry, Northern Bayberry and dwarf evergreen specimens provide structure to vegetated borders. Lilacs, Mayflower Viburnum, hydrangea, pussy willow and an assortment of tender perennials actuate a sensory experience, contributing layers of fragrance, color, and texture to the composition.
