A rich site history is alive in the details
—project description—
Home to the loading docks of the Pigeon Hill Granite Company up until the early 1900’s, this once industrial site has been thoughtfully re-imagined as a unique private residence nestled within a dramatic coastal point. The site’s rich history is alive within the design details and celebrated in a myriad of garden spaces to accommodate any occasion. Remnants of the old derrick, light rail system, and steam power house are just waiting to be re-discovered by the curious garden visitor. A repaired granite wharf re-connects the home to a small cove. Paths meander through woodland gardens and the sounds of water emanating from water features beckon one to explore the property’s “secret” gardens. The ocean’s energy is tangible from the end of a rocky point, where enormous granite blocks have been organized to create a fire terrace encircled by stone lounge chairs and a firewood crib. The monumental seating encourages one to stretch out horizontally and gaze up at the stars or a summer night’s fireworks display.
A powerful design collaboration with the client and project architect resulted in a multi-functional accessory building which provides parking, storage, a potting shed and an intimate sitting area with an ocean view. The driveway encircles a grove of honey locusts and large granite blocks create a safe barrier at the crest of a steep embankment. Reclaimed granite was used extensively, along with large granite blocks salvaged from on site, in combination with custom metal fabrications to create timeless garden features that will endure for generations. Permeable paving helps to mitigate storm water runoff and a rich native plant palette serves to stabilize the sensitive coastal bank, foster wildlife habitat, while also offering visual interest throughout the seasons.
