graceful pathways & modern amenities breathe new life

—project description—

A large scale home renovation was an impetus for a dramatic reboot of the property’s exterior spaces. The relocation of the garage entry was countered by a new vehicular approach and a fresh presentation of the home’s new front entry, which doubles as a gallery. Stone pillars and a cobblestone apron provide a welcome invitation at the foot of the drive. Tight, linear bands of bluestone make up the main walkway and patio surfaces, while Barre granite curbing and steps negotiate the property’s changes in elevation. An undulating wave of broad, granite steps, with grass landings, provides a vital connection to the neighborhood cul de sac, which conveniently offers overflow parking as well as spaces for play. The interior spaces extend graciously outdoors to a custom, outdoor kitchen island, which supports the main dining terrace. First generation curbstones, salvaged from the Boston Common, were re-purposed as a fire pit, while hefty Cape granite posts are situated as a firewood crib. The outdoor rooms hinge on a sculptural focal point, which in turn offers each of the entertainment spaces a unique visual backdrop. River Birch tree canopies overhead, further define the outdoor spaces. Western Red Cedar, and a variety of hydrangea, rhododendron, and viburnum provide privacy, while drifts of hayscented fern, ornamental grasses and a healthy mix of tender perennials offer textures and visual interest throughout the seasons.
